Welcome to ceramics! This is an impressive group of students! I've gotten to know them better now that we're wrapping up the third week of class.

Because there isn't any homework in art classes, I use this web site to post pictures of student work and to keep parents appraised of the latest projects we're working on.

It will easily be 4-5 weeks before the first pieces will be done firing (twice!) so be patient. There also won't be any grades posted for ceramic pieces during that time.

Students evaluate their work and get a 50% say in their grade. This helps them to make improvements where they're weak, and to recognize their strengths. Because of firing schedules, it's rare that the entire class has their work loaded into one kiln. Consequently, there will be times when one student will have a grade for their work, and your student won't. It all evens out by mid-term and final grading periods, so reassure them that all will be well!

This is a lively and talented group of students! We're going to be covering a wide variety of art media and styles during the class, so your student should end the term with a basic understanding of Basic Design.

We started the term by doing some ice breakers so the kids can get to know each other. Then, students created a collage that showed the different parts of their personality -or- the different parts of our world.

We're currently working on a drawing unit to help the students draw realistically. We've already covered two techniques: contour and basic shape. At the moment we're working on a third technique called Isomorphic in which students measure their face to make sure the features are accurate proportionally.

I'll try to post examples of the best 4 or 5 pieces from each project. Hopefully, I'll get every student on the web page by the end of the term!

Advanced Art

April 6, 2012

The Advanced Art class is wonderful! There are 28 students enrolled, and because they're (mostly) all returning students, it's easy to get started creating artwork! We started the term with teptraptychs which are on display in the case outside of the art room. Teptraptychs are works of art that are made up of 4 different pieces of art. It's similar to the tryptychs (3 panels of art that made up an alter piece) that were popular during the Middle Ages.

The teptraptychs have work that represented the student's past, present, future and dreams. I've attached 7 creative examples below!

Last week, the students chose an artist they wanted to study in depth, did web-based research on that artist, and started creating a piece of artwork that copies the style and media of that person. It's been fun to be introduced to some new artists that I never would have learned about. The students will wrap up this unit on Wednesday, April 11, and then will start a study watercolor/fiber arts.

Independent Study of Art/Ceramics

April 6, 2012

Spring Term has started. I have a big group of Independent Study students this term, so there will be lots of solo shows. Unfortunately, those won't start until late May and early June.

Students are required to hand in a piece each Friday unless they are working on a multi-week project, or are waiting for pieces to be fired. I encourage them to stay up-to-date on their projects, rather than letting them pile up. It's a lot to grade in the final week of the term.

I encourage students to try a wide variety of media and subjects while they are in Independent Study. This is a great opportunity to use off of the supplies that I have available in the art room!

Each Independent Study student is required to show their work for one week at the end of the term. I encourage them to take some time to design their show to include an artist's statement, a photograph, and other items that show their personality as well as the art they've produced during the term. Feel free to come by and see their show!!

Feel free to contact me if you have questions at RachelKKirby@philomath.k12.or.us

The final three Independent Study solo shows of the term are on display now outside of the art room and in the library. Kevin Mitchell and Marisa Browning-Kamins have a display of their pottery as well as Marisa's drawings and paintings. Bryce Lynn has a show with a variety of media in it, including ceramics, ink, and pencil drawings. Enjoy!

Additionally, it should be noted that I've given Marisa the November Art Student of the Month Award. Her pencil drawings have created caught the attention of many students! Congratulations!

There are currently two solo shows in the cases outside of the art room. On the east side is a display by junior Shea Ballweber. She has been focusing on painting and drawing during her Independent Study, but is also exploring calligraphy and ink.

In the west case is junior Blake James. He works mostly in pencil, but has been expanding into colored pencil and trying to create backgrounds for his characters.

The September Art Student of the Month is junior Kevin Mitchell, and the October Art Student of the Month is Sara Schrock. These two have really infused new energy and life into the wheel throwing program at PHS. They've encouraged me to buy new clays specifically made for throwing, have been teaching many other people the skills, and have been producing LOTS of work! Congratulations!
